Perfect eComStation -- Fast boot

eComStation should boot faster. User should see the desktop in 10 seconds. Some drivers/processes should continue to load while the user is starting e-mail client.

Hello,

Would be real nice if loading of drivers could be postponed until the desktop background came up (then resizing of the display resolution would be allowed as the real driver load).

Then load FS, mouse and display drivers, so that as many drivers could be loaded as late as possible and wouldn't require reboots as well etc.
Med vänliga hälsningar / With kind regards / Mit freundlichen Grüßen,

Roderick Klein:

Looking at it most of the boot time with eCS is spent loading device drivers that already have a fast init. Then the RUN and call statements are loaded.
As one of the enigeers on eCS I can state there is not much room for further improvement. Take into account bootable JFS (its big cache) and
light wheight size of OS/2 then its clear a lot can not be done realy.

Some of the demons can be loaded in parallel since some of the demons need to load in a certain order.

I'm open for conclusions how boot time can be reduced but I can not come up with any suggestions that would give one or 2 seconds boot time reduction.

Lewis G Rosenthal:

The only time boot performance is an issue for me is when I'm traveling & need to get my
ThinkPad up in a hurry to use a hotspot or something. Thus, of far greater importance to me
would be working hibernation support, either to a file or a partition, but preferably a file
(so that it mat be disabled & re-enabled without losing a partition along
the line).

Other than that, an improvemeny in DHCP client response would be helpful,
but not essential (we need a new IP stack, anyway, which supports IPv6).

Wired machines should normally stay up and running all the time, anyway
(that's our recommendation to clients), and so good power management in
today's "green-conscious" world would be ideal.

Andy Willis:

One thing I found while testing uniaud through a suspend was that USB
drives really don't like suspend. At least with APM, the USB drives
must then go through a chkdsk (and even JFS takes quite awhile with 320G
being checked). If there is a way to check for USB drives prior to
actually suspending the machine to allow it to be cleanly ejected would
be useful.

Franklin:

The IT department of where I work was directed to and ordered all users to shut down and power strip off.

It seems like certain drivers when loading search query and initialize components each time. Could we save time by these drivers saving the info once and just loading every time? Another extended time user is DHCP along with requester and peer, although the latter two do work in the background after the WPS is useable.

When observing the eCS competitors and their boot times - the benefits is not worth the effort.
Instead focus more on ACPI, suspend and stuff like that.
Live long and prosper...
