unbootable JFS with mounted USB drive

Postby Rob Hamerling » Thu Aug 31, 2006 11:54

I have 2 eCS 2.0 beta partitions with bootble JFS (beta2 and beta2 M2). These worked fine until I added a drive in an external USB 2.0 enclosure. . When the USB-drive is connected at boottime the eCS bootmanager selection screen appears normally, but the boot of both JFS-partitions fails. Something is displayed on the screen which looks like the bootsector of the selected partition! When I select another partition (WinXP-NTFS, eCS 1.2 HPFS, SUSE LInux Reiser2) booting succeeds normally.
The eCS bootnamager and all bootable partitions are on the first primary PATA drive. The first slave drive does not have a bootable partition (only 1 JFS data partition), the USB drive does not contain a bootable partition, only 1 JFS data partition.
When the USB-drive is _not_ connected at boot-time the boot of all partition succeeds normally. When I connect it later after bootup this drive it is accessable normally.
So it is only a JFS-boot-problem.

Regards, Rob.

Didn't see any reaction so far.....

Anyway, some more info (7 sep '06):
I did some more tests with hardware I have available:
Booting fails with the following USB drives:
- a 128 MB USB stick (no brandname, Prolific chip)
- a 1 GB Peak USB stick (Feiya Technology chip)
- a 20 GB drive from a T23 Thinkpad in a Sweex USB enclosure
(Cypress Semiconductor corp chip)
Booting succeeds with:
- an xD flash reader (Alcor Micro Corp. chip) with 256 MB xD card
- a Sandisk Compact Flash reader (Sandisk Corp. chip) with 16 MB CF card.
All (except the card in de xD reader) are 'LVM-ed', but that doesn seem to make a difference.

The boot fails before I see the logo.
I have made 2 photographs: one of a failure with 2.0 beta2, the other with 2.0 m2 beta2.
The effects are the same, but you can see 2 different bootsectors.

U don't see a possibility to attach a file here and my pictures are not online, so I'll send these per Email.

So far no more 'visible' activity on this item!

Today I installed eCS 2.0 beta3: the problem is still there!

Who doesn't have USB-drives these days?

Who thinks this lack of response/activity motivates me to report more problems?

Rob.

Hi Rob,

I think Pasha is currently pressed by more urgent problems with ACPI and eCS beta3. By the way, from the ACPI-FAQ.doc:

Q30: I had the feeling the test of ACPI was a waste of my time and a
waste of the developer too, if I send an test-report.
A30: In the start of the ACPI project (2002, Warpstock Europe 2002) we had
100 questions. Today we have 200 answers and new 1000 questions. The
reports from testers is the description of environment very important
for developers of ACPI drivers and tools. We look at configuration and
properties of computers and make long-term decisions. All reports are
saved to one database. Developers discuss logs every day. Don't worry
if you don't get response. We are not building pyramid of e-mails
(answering to every email). We are using your logs as food for the thought.
Press developers in the forums of beta-zone to fix urgent bugs.

I hope the same apply for this forum too :-)

Best wishes
Gabriele
