I need new application -- Invoice generator

Postby Eugene Gorbunoff » Thu Jun 12, 2008 13:05

eComStation should include software to print invoices and other documents.

Система будет другой, если

* на CD2 будут шаблоны бланков для моей страны/города
** налоговая декларация
** обращение в милицию
** квитанция для Сбербанка

(как заполнять - пока что не обсуждаем)

Hi Eugene,

this can be done in rexx. I can do that - *if* someones gives me a DLL that supports basic functions for PRETTY printing from rexx.
(See also my comments in the "accounting software" thread)

Thomas

let's analyze:

- OpenOffice, Lotus SmartSuite are aimed to organize DB and print Invoices, etc. but..

+ users don't know how to use office suites ^, they need simple cheap solution.

Hi Eugene,

hmm... what about "LBH" (Little Business Helper) - see http://de.ecomstation.ru/apecs.php?action=item&id=804 ?
If that is not sufficient, tell me what you need:
- feature list
- use case examples
- fake screenshot
- etc.

And - how many people (among the millions of OS/2 users) will need this? 1? 3?
(I will start coding if 5 people are interested and tell me what they need. And if they do testing and bug reporting.)

Cheers,
Thomas

i don't think that LBH ist still available at all. for me it would make more sense to add this feature to textbuch fibu. http://www.textbuch.de

We will purchase 10 licenses and help with artwork IF
* the invoice generator is able to generate .PDF
* if you prepare invoice template for Russia (there are some requirements)
* if the application is multi-language
* if it's PM, C code
* database of items

Does anybody need Invoice generator?
If you research Windows/Mac market then you see that they have many invoice generators. So.. there is demand on their markets..

Hi,

good to see this is progressing!
When I said "I will start coding if 5 people need it", I didn't mean money, I meant USERS. Okay, I see there is a need.
Let us talk about your criteria:

* the invoice generator is able to generate .PDF
Okay, this means "pretty printing". My idea is to make the user simply select the printer. So he can select real printer of PDF (-printer).

* if you prepare invoice template for Russia (there are some requirements)
When the software is ready, anyone can create any kind of template with "placeholders" like ${amount.USD} or similar. Okay? :)

* if the application is multi-language
Okay, it will be "ready for multilanguage": Others can provide translations and compile as language DLL for the program

* if it's PM, C code
OUCH! SHIT!! PM is no problem - but "C" is. I don't know C... not to speak of OS/2 classes and object model...

* database of items
Hm. Does that mean something like inventory management? Articles, prices, stock amounts... ?

Looking at all the above, I see one clear problem: > C <
You did not talk about "open source". So I wonder why you want it to be done in "C" ? If you only get an executable... it is not important what language it was made with. Do you mean "C" because of speed? PM is no problem (I understand "PM" means a program with a GUI, okay?)
Well, the only things I can offer you as OS/2 programming is REXX or VisualAge Basic.

VABasic has all the printing functions ready, don't know for database... you don't want DB2 to be installed for this little software, right? ;) So I will have to check if VABsic can "somehow" be made to work with sqlite database... or simply ODBC if that works too... no idea. Even flat-file "database" will work to some extent if everything else fails...

REXX has not the printing functions (yet, we're working on that...) but it is great for quick development, lightweight distribution and has all stuff (database DLL...) available. A nice GUI is no problem too - you can select from DrDialog, Vx-Rexx, etc. to create EXE files.

Any comments, ideas? Can I start coding? :-)

A) It's necessary use C.. native PM..

"+" yes, you can use basic or REXX or .. easy to write and debug BUT

"-" if use REXX + Visual means then the dialogs are ugly (IMHO)

* "-" you can't use useful libraries <<<<<<< !!!!!

B) fresh idea:
why export to PDF? User fills the form => there is a template of .html files => substitute the variables with the values => voila, .html ready for preview / print via web-browser.

Hi,

yes, with REXX you are limited, it only creates ugly UI.
Even if you can do nice artwork, it still looks not so good.
The only chance would be to have a good (I mean REALLY good!) DLL for accessing QT for example.
I don't think this will happen soon. :)

But there is a problem:
Even if you create a very pretty user interface (rexx, basic, C, whatever...) many people will complain "this is not using OS/2 window standards".
(You know how people are... sometimes...)

For the fresh idea:
I was thinking about that too. Problem is, that the user has a small native application but then needs to go into web browser for printing??
The users will not understand this. Also, if we need web browser for printing, why not make the program a web application directly?
You can install lightweight web servers along with an application and you have database access as well. Pretty simple.

Talking about Visual Age for Basic:
This is Visual Age for OS/2. It can work with SOM classes and all the shebang... so if there is a good DLL or classes installed, it can be accessed from VABasic.
(When you say "useful DLL", you are talking about eCoSoft runtimes? ;) )

Another thing:
Do you want
- a simple invoice generator
- an invoice generator with articles database
- or a full POS software directly?

(I am not on IRC but yahoo web messenger, msn... or skype me at "thomas.klein.skype" for instant chats if that helps...)

Regards,
Thomas
